Orgalim has recently published the study EU CBAM – Assessing impacts on Europe’s Technology Industries which is surely the basis of its ‘new’ position and further activities.
The study is based on the survey of 14 member companies of Orgalim’s industry associations which provided data on 15 products. The analysis shows that CBAM and the phaseout of ETS FA could increase production costs by over 5 % in one third of all products. In some cases production costs increases up to 48%. This increase will reduce international competitiveness and create a risk of carbon leakage.
8 of 15 products were found to be at immediate risk of carbon leakage from 2026 (start of definitive regime). 11 of 15 products will be prone for carbon leakage from 2034, when CBAM will be fully in place.
The study confirms the negative impact of CBAM and the phase out of the ETS FA which can concretely lead to job losses and can be seen as a threat for the industry’s green transformation and for the EU’s carbon neutrality goal.
