EMTA has published its joint position of the European downstream manufacturing industries on the ongoing trilogue negotiations on the extension of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), co-signed by CIELFFA and FVK.

As a brief recap, EMTA (European Metal Technology Alliance) is a European alliance of downstream metal industry associations, initiated by WSM to strengthen the representation of downstream industries in EU policy discussions, including on CBAM.

The joint message is: CBAM must protect the entire European value chain – from basic materials to finished products.

The joint call focuses on three key messages:

• Broader downstream coverage: Keep the downstream products already included in the EU positions and support the broader coverage adopted by the European Parliament, including the product codes identified by affected industries.
• A level playing field across the value chain: CBAM should avoid creating additional competitive disadvantages for European downstream manufacturers and prevent production and investment from shifting outside the EU.
• An effective export solution: Downstream manufacturers need a predictable, WTO-compatible and workable solution to address the carbon costs embedded in European materials when competing in global markets.

The position has been sent to Members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and the other EU institutions involved in the trilogue negotiations.
